With support from JISC, the Clipper project is developing an online analysis tool for time-based media. The tool enables the creation of ‘virtual clips’, which are data files that reference an online source video or audio file, and note the beginning and end points for a playable clip. The Clipper tool also supports the annotation of clips and the organisation of clips into groups to produce playable cliplists; and clips and cliplists can be shared as simple URLs or downloaded as HTML data files. Developed in the context of research data management, Clipper also has potential applications in education, for example, in creating links to playable extracts from online media resources. In this one hour practical workshop, we’ll introduce the project, demonstrate the prototype, provide an opportunity for some hands-on practice, and discuss potential improvements and applications within research and teaching. Please bring along a laptop with an HTML5 compliant web browser (e.g. Google Chrome) to try the Clipper tool yourself.
