IOP Open Talk in Milton Keynes

At 7:30pm at The Open University

Berrill Lecture Theatre, Milton Keynes MK7 6AA

Tuesday 10 March: Dr Floor van Leeuwen, University of Cambridge

"Details of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram as revealed by the 2nd Gaia data release”

I will briefly review the Gaia satellite mission and how the data from this mission allow us to establish, with much greater accuracy than ever before, critical relations between observed properties of stars. I will show in particular the details that have now come into focus for the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, which shows relations between stellar surface temperature and brightness for stars of different ages, masses and chemical composition, and which is as such a vital tool in understanding stellar structure and evolution.

If you have any questions before or during the lecture please email them to STEM-SPS-IOP-Lecture@open.ac.uk and they will be read out to the speaker after the lecture if time allows

ALL WELCOME!
