When searching for information, users often need to organise the different documents that they have found. This assists them in identifying common themes, schools of thought and other patterns in the literature. Organisation of documents can also be used to keep together material that is yet to be read, or needs to be returned to for further study. Spatial hypertexts support this activity, but have no explicit support for the note-keeping that goes alongside it. In the "real", physical world this is done by post-its, inserted pages and other informal marks on the document. This talk will discuss some of the problems that emerge when recreating this annotation in the electronic domain.
