Invited talk: Language Learning in Digital Gaming Spaces
Digital games in education are polarizing. Some hail them as a panacea for language learning, while others condemn them as a childish dumbing down of education. Because digital games mark relatively uncharted territory, there is little evidence to support either of these extreme views. As digital games are becoming more understood, as they are becoming more commonplace, normalized, and accepted, and as the body of research and interest is growing, we are entering an era of more nuanced and substantial discussions about the merits of digital games in language education.
Dr. Felix Kronenberg (Rhodes College, Memphis, TN, USA), an Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures and President-Elect of the International Association for Language Learning Technology, will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of digital games in the language learning process , the obstacles their implementation faces, as well as the concepts of motivation, agency, identities, curricular integration, incidental language learning, and possibility spaces.
