There are more than six billion language learners in the world, of whom only a minority suffer from the disability of monolingualism. As the very nature of higher education is changed by processes including globalisation, marketisation, massification, Englishisation and infantilisation, the number of international students is set to rise in two decades from 1.8 to 7.2 million a year. This challenging and wide-ranging lecture will address the research issues raised by student residence abroad within degree programmes, and review the complex of factors which influence the learning outcomes of residence abroad. |
