Join us for an event that will inform, challenge and inspire you as we celebrate the launch of the Open University’s Widening Participation Action Plan and Race Equality Policy. The morning session of this all day event will be webcast live to the internet. For more information about other event activities please visit the Equality and Diversity intranet site (link below).
Key note speakers- Will Swann, the Director, Students will open the event and talk about our past successes alongside the future challenges we have set ourselves.
- John Storan, Co-Director, Action on Access will discuss the latest national developments and trends in widening participation.
- Robert Berkeley, Deputy Director, Runnymede Trust will provide an insight into the latest thinking in race equality and education.
Panel discussion
Ann Phoenix, Professor of Social and Developmental Psychology will introduce a panel discussion that will examine the issues of targeted action, institutional change, and personal responsibility. John Storan and Robert Berkeley will be joined on the panel by:- Saheema Rawat, Policy Adviser, Race, Religion and Belief, Equality Challenge Unit
- Jo Wiggans, Director, Aimhigher Greater Manchester
- Judith Stein, the first Openings graduate
- Linda Jones,Pro-Vice-Chancellor Curriculum and Awards
Storytelling
Françoise and Clifford Ugochukwu will tell folktales from Igboland, Nigeria
Target audience
The audience will be internal staff and colleagues from organisations with whom we work in partnership.
Intended outcomes of the day are- To understand the motivations and aims of our plans for the next three years
- To learn about the latest developments and thinking in widening participation and race equality in higher education
- To showcase good practice in race equality and widening participation across different functions and regions of the Open University
- To obtain commitment to action required to achieve the plans’ desired outcomes
