Berrill Lecture Theatre, The Open University, Walton Hall Campus, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
Many mechanical examples of Newton's laws of motion and the nature of our 'clockwork' universe will be demonstrated. These laws have enabled us to venture out into space and explore other worlds. The Voyager Mission to the outer planets will be examined, and the slingshot effect, which enabled the Voyager spacecraft to reach their destinations in a fraction of the time taken by a direct route, will be explained and demonstrated. Finally, how likely are we to reach our nearest star in this millennium?
OU staff and students are most welcome to attend the 11 am presentation.
