This event took place on 31st March 2011 at 4:00pm (15:00 GMT)
Berrill Lecture Theatre, The Open University, Walton Hall Campus, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
In her book How We Became Posthuman, media historian and critic Katherine Hayles has famously explored the question of how, in her words, information lost its body in the formative years of the information sciences in the middle of the last century. My talk takes off from this question to explore recent developments in the study of digital media that recover the entanglements of bodies and technologies. Drawing on a series of examples from my own research and others within science and technology studies (STS), I will make the case for an understanding of information as irreducibly social and material, virtual and real. |
