This event took place on 1st November 2011 at 7:00pm (19:00 GMT)
Berrill Lecture Theatre, The Open University, Walton Hall Campus, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
The three part BBC television series, Made in Britain, presented by Evan Davis, highlighted several challenges to the British economy.
This event explores the challenge faced by the UK economy and its international performance, in the context of competition from emerging economies. There are three inter-connected parts to this narrative.
The continuing contribution of manufacturing the UK’s comparative advantage in intellectual property and, the threats from emerging economies as they develop tradable services. These issues are at the centre of academic, policy and practitioner debates about the direction of the UK economy in the aftermath of the financial crisis and its consequences. By focusing on export growth and investment as the means of reviving the economy, government policy foregrounds manufacturing as an important part of this strategy. This event challenges the view that the British do not make anything anymore. By taking an internationally comparative approach, a more global perspective is taken.
The event is for students, alumni, academics, policy makers and practitioners.
This will be a video recorded & webcast live at the Open University in front of an audience. The recording will be placed on the Open University’s open source website OpenLearn accompanied by on-line activities and debates. These outcomes will be part of the continuing scholarship activities of the Open University.
