Jonkonuu and Carnival are dances that are performed during the festive seasons in the Caribbean. The Jonkonuu dance occurs across many islands in the Caribbean, although it originated in Jamaica in the early 1700s. Carnival celebrations on the other hand originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the late 18th century and is celebrated across the Caribbean one week before lent (usually in February or March). This presentation will explore the history of Jonkonuu and Carnival as a political protest by the enslaved communities in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. Thus, offering unique insights into their perspectives on the enslaver’s lifestyles, values, relationships, and attitudes towards the enslaved during this period.
