Welcome address and Keynote Presentation

I study synthetic worlds: online environments where thousands or even millions of users share a persistent, fabricated geographic space at the same time. These places, billed and sold as games, actually seem to be offering something more than mere entertainment. They act as a fantastical alternative to ordinary life, and as such they pose a significant challenge to business-as-usual in ordinary society: markets, public policy, politics, law, romance.

In the area of economics, for example, one pressing issue involves the extent to which people are paying real money to buy items for their game characters, thus blurring the distinction between the game economy and the real one. And this is not the only way in which synthetic worlds threaten the lines we have drawn between fantasy and reality.

As a parent and a gamer, I am both excited and concerned about these developments. The objective of my work is to increase our understanding of this technology.

Art Talk - Myra Hutton, textile artist, talk and demo

This event will be held in CMR01

Inspired by our natural surroundings and the elements, Myra's beautiful work consists of densely textured layers exploring colour and texture through a fusion of hand dyed fabrics, hand made felt with embellishments of thread, wire, beads and feathers. Using wool and silk fibres in a painterly way, creating blocks of vibrant colour before felting, blending and shading as she goes, Myra builds up the layers with textured
embellishment using the sewing machine as a drawing tool to bring the picture alive. Myra exhibits at several galleries and
goes into schools as a visiting artist and runs workshops from her studio in her gallery in Ampthill.

Isn't this wonderful? Please email me to book a place

Art Talk

This event was held in CMR15

Annabelle is an artist based in Milton Keynes at Westbury Farm
studios. She is represented by the Rebecca Hossack gallery in London and has sold many of her paintings to public and private collections. In October 2007 Annabelle had a solo show at the Three White Walls Gallery space in Birmingham titled ‘Articulated Landscape’. The work shown was a social/geographical investigation of the psychodynamics of space in relation to people in place. It is a survey of how we use space and function within a modern age. The work reveals people in a blank white space, articulated by the urban patterns. More recently Annabelle has been reintroducing colour and landscape back into her work. Annabelle will be giving a slide show and talk of her work from the time she left Staffordshire University in 1992 to present day.

Light refreshments available, to confirm your attendance please email Lynn Watkinson, Artwork Co-ordinator L.P.Watkinson@open.ac.uk

Art Talk - Complex Systems Art?

This event is to be held in CMR15

Karen has been making and exhibiting sculpture, photography, installation, film & video, live performance and digitally interactive work for 20 years. Yet most of this work was also not truly 'conceptual' nor 'minimal', nor any other convenient rationale one associates with a 'craft free' approach. For a long time, Karen had absolutely no idea why this was; why was her work like this? Come and find out ...

Please email me (Lynn Watkinson) to book a place L.P.Watkinson, thanks

The Google Generation - A Crisis of Information Literacy?

A new study overturns the common assumption that the 'Google Generation' youngsters born or brought up in the Internet age is the most web-literate. The first ever virtual longitudinal study carried out by the CIBER research team at University College London claims that, although young people demonstrate an apparent ease and familiarity with computers, they rely heavily on search engines, view rather than read and do not possess the critical and analytical skills to assess the information that they find on the web.

The report also shows that research-behaviour traits that are commonly associated with younger users impatience in search and navigation, and zero tolerance for any delay in satisfying their information needs are now becoming the norm for all age-groups, from younger pupils and undergraduates through to professors. Commissioned by the British Library and JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee), the study calls for libraries to respond urgently to the changing needs of researchers and other users.

DIY game-based multimedia in your library - is it for you?

This session is aimed at anyone who is creating multimedia in-house in a library environment, and is based on experience from the Multi-Lib programme in Windsor and Maidenhead public libraries, which looks at creating multimedia for library service development. These are created using commonly available kit - software like Flash, open source web languages such as PHP/MySQL and PERL and simple hardware including digital cameras. Multi-Lib outputs include the use of computer games to market computers to children and parents (winner of the 2004 CILIP PPRG multimedia award), the use of cartoon trailers to promote reading schemes, the UKís first talking childrenís comments form for libraries, and games that incorporate user-generated content. Andrew will demonstrate Multi-Lib content, and explain some of the creative and technological processes behind them.

The session is an informal look at what is involved in making multimedia, and aims to share experience and tactics, with quick wins and pitfalls to avoid. It also discusses simple resource models for complex development and how to consider return on investment.

With the presenters' consent, we video record our Library seminars (including any questions during the seminar) and make them available on the internet. The seminar audience confirm their agreement to this by entering the location and attending the seminar.

Art Talk - Points of Departure: A Retrospective Look - an illustrated talk

Sonia Lawson RA will be staking out the influences upon her work since the late sixties, beginning with the belief that conscience and accountability had to be taken on board, looking at those influences that have occupied her from early social comment to later bright autobiographics; and recently to her use of paint for its own sake, applying abstract principles and gaining some freedom from strictures of specific story telling yet scoring figurative elements into the surface. And in our time, her firm belief in that painting and drawing remain worthwhile activities.

Apologies for the poor audio playback quality during this event

Joint TLRG & CALRG Seminar - Perspectives on The Learning Landscape: Research Methods to Complement the Institutional Point of View

The Learning Landscape Project (LLP) is a research project chaired by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Melveena McKendrick with a broad remit to describe teaching and learning practices and processes in the University of Cambridge and its Colleges. During Easter term in 2007 the LLP made use of a range of methods aimed at providing a picture of student use of ICTs in their daily lives. These methods included a student survey on technology use (1923 respondents), the Experience Sampling Method, the Very Advanced Technology Method, the Cold Turkey Method, and the Movers & Shapers Method (52 participants in total).

This seminar discusses these methodologies in detail, reports on early findings and emerging themes, and presents a plan for future work.

The Open Learn Conference - Researching open content in education

The mornings session of the conference took place in G01/02 Nightingale house, Accenture.

The keynote session of the OpenLearn2007 conference was given by John Seely Brown.

The ways in which people can learn are changing with new opportunities to learn at a distance, to learn as part of global community and to learn using new technologies. Open and free educational resources are an important component in this expanded world of learning and major initiatives are now underway to provide such resources.

This conference recognises the research challenge alongside the business challenge of providing, using and sustaining free and open resources and invites contributions and participation from those who are interested in how to research open content and what the findings are from those working in this challenging area.

There will be no charge for attendance with priority for registration given to those responding to the call for papers. Selected papers will be developed for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Interactive Media in Education.

Art Walk 2007 - Gasping Goldie performance

About the Gasping Goldie performance:

We are all drowning all the time...in life. One person's comfort zone is another's anxiety. We may be innocent in purpose but how often do we really understand one another? Gasping Goldie is, on one level, about human ignorance, our inability to understand truly a situation before we react. But on another level it is the story of a creative struggle, a soul gasping to survive unnoticed. There is more than one way to drown.

About the artist, Jessica Rost:

The main focus of my work has been sculpture and installation. I'm best known for my large scale car sculptures although I work in many different materials. The work has always had a tendency towards the theatrical or perhaps comical even though I deliver quite serious messages about corruption, consumerism or man's relationship to the environment.
This has led me more recently to express my ideas through story telling in the form of film making, animation, interference art, performance pieces and carnival costumes or a combination of these. The physical need I have to actually make things is still very important to me and this I continue to do but the products become props or costumes to another end: part of a performance, captured on film etc. ... At the moment I am especially interested in the world of live art and video performances, this allows me to punctuate my work emotionally and even spiritually through a connection to a live audience. As an artist, active in Milton Keynes since 1995, I think I have contributed a great deal locally as: car sculptor, symposium co-ordinator and community artist.
