New perspectives on the British empire
Colonial Countryside: National Trust Houses Reinterpreted
Prof Corinne Fowler

This event took place on 28th June 2021 at 7:00pm (18:00 GMT)

19:00 - 20:00. A 45-minute lecture and 15 minutes question and answers with external speaker Professor Corinne Fowler for staff and students.

Professor Corinne Fowler is an expert in the legacies of colonialism and postcolonialism to literature, heritage and representations of British history. She is author of Green Unpleasant Land: Creative Responses to Rural England’s Colonial Connections (2020).

She co-founded and led the Centre for New Writing and she combined teaching and research to create ‘Colonial Countryside: National Trust Houses Reinterpreted’, a child-led history and writing project supported by a panel of experts in British imperial history. The project considered how children can be supported to take the lead in national conversations about heritage and history. Colonial Countryside represents an attempt to produce the next generation of historians, archivists, curators and writers who will be able to engage substantially with this topic.

The project produced curriculum change in 63 schools, it also enabled 11 historic houses to address their African, Caribbean and East Indian Company connections.
