Art Talk
Olney Lace Circle
Elizabeth Knight

This event took place on 12th February 2009 at 12:30pm (12:30 GMT)

The Olney Lace Circle was formed in1979 with a handful of members. Since then it has gone from strength to strength and now has over 30 members.

We have met in a variety of locations including the Baptist Church, The Cowper and Newton Museum and our present meting place is St Joseph’s Convent.

Over the years we have participated as a group in projects where each member contributed a piece of lace which was specially designed to form part of a larger piece. The Cowper and Newton Museum have a series of pictures of the four seasons which were made and donated by the Olney Lace Circle. These took eight years in all to complete – a mammoth task but we are proud of our achievements. We have also contributed to the Milton Keynes One World Quilt. Another project was to depict the River Ouse in lace for the Olney Millennium Textile Map. Our latest project was a “chessboard” wall hanging. This was to commemorate our 25th Anniversary and is currently hanging in the Olney Centre.

We hold a Lace Day each year during September when most of our members attend and play host to other lace groups in the area. We often arrange to have a Speaker who talks on a related subject and Lace Suppliers are also in attendance.

Lace demonstrations also feature on our calendar. Local village fetes and fairs occasionally ask us to supply a few lacemakers to demonstrate our craft.
