Inaugural lecture

The Social Life of Networks

Prof John Naughton
This event took place on 19th June 2006
Berrill Lecture Theatre, The Open University, Walton Hall Campus, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
This lecture is about the impact of the Internet on our society. Why has the network been such a disruptive force? What are the origins, dimensions and implications of this disruption? What are the technological, economic and social explanations for it? And where is it heading? Drawing on his experience as an historian of the network, John Naughton seeks to explain how a geeks' "network of computer networks" came to have such a transformative impact on industry, government and social behaviour.
