Professor Jonathan Rix’s inaugural lecture on Why school is bad for us – lessons we need to learn, which will askwhether our obsession with individual assessment, literacy skills and the right kind of behaviour guarantees the failure of millions of children and whether there are some simple ways to release teachers from these shackles.
Jonathan Rix is Professor of Participation and Learning Supportin the Faculty of Wellbeing Education and Language Systems at The Open University
In Why school is bad for us – lessons we need to learn, Jonathan will pose the view that education is about dividing us up; the subjects we study, the classes we study with, the practices that teach us.
He will suggest that given the history of our schools we should perhaps not be surprised; but the negative experience of it all still dominates the lives of many, if not the majority of learners.
This lecture draws on everyday examples from around the world to try to show how this is happening and why this might be. It will make audiences question what seems obvious about such ideas as literacy, behaviour and ability; and it and will offer some relatively simple and accessible solutions which would help bridge the divide.
This lecture will be followed by refreshments, after which Jonathan will join a panel discussion on If school is really bad for us, what do we need to do?
Panellists are: Teresa Cremin, Professor of Literacy and Peter Twining, Professor of Education (Futures) and James Biddulph, Head Teacher at Cambridge University Primary School, Zoë Nolan, Lead Councillor for children and families on Milton Keynes Council. The panel is moderated by Richard Garner, a journalist for over 40 years - writing for the Times Educational Supplement (TES), and former Education Editor of the Mirror and the Independent and author of The Thirty Years War about teacher reform.
