The impact of multinational companies on sustainable development in Africa: A comparative study of British and Chinese non-market strategies in the energy sector

The purpose of our workshop is to engage and compare British and Chinese energy corporations in the development of responsible and sustainable strategies for investments in low- and middle-income African countries. In so doing, we focus on how business and government can work together to generate sustainable development initiatives and policies, and we also consider the implications for corporate productivity and return on investment. A related impact item is to provide insights into how effective stakeholder management in sub-Saharan Africa, can enable policy makers to enhance their understanding of, and connectivity with, the macro-economy. We intend to develop cross-disciplinary and inter-institutional research synergies to explore how multinational companies engage with governments and institutions in select African countries in ways that both benefit the firms and engender more sustainable development in Africa.
