Social Justice is central to social work. It is arguably absent from much of the dominant discourse in relation to social work with children and families yet in times of austerity is ever more necessary.

Drawing upon case study material this presentation explores the impact of poverty and inequality on families’ lives and social work practice and examines the possibilities provided by the Capability Approach, developed the Nobel Prize winning economist Amartya Sen, to offer a framework for humane and socially just social work practice.
