CEPSAR Lecture

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and the Large Hadron Collider

Prof Jonathan Butterworth
This event took place on 17th May 2012
Berrill Lecture Theatre, The Open University, Walton Hall Campus, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom

The Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva, is probably the biggest scientific experiment ever conducted. Thousands of physicists and engineers have worked for years, constructing 27km of superconducting magnets to collide protons at unprecedented energies, and building huge detectors to see what the result is. One of the headline goals is the hunt for the Higgs boson, which is more accurately described as the quest to understand the unification of the weak and electromagnetic forces and the origin of mass - or "electroweak symmetry breaking". I'll give the latest news from the experiment - whatever it is by then!
