Neither Logical nor Illogical, just human?

Some issues in science education for citizenship

Prof Edgar Jenkins
This event took place on 28th February 2009
Berrill Lecture Theatre, The Open University, Walton Hall Campus, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
Governments, professional scientific societies and many other organisations across the world are currently devoting very substantial financial and other resources to the promotion of a scientifically literate citizenry. In this lecture, Edgar identifies three approaches to the advancing public engagement with science and, where evidence exists, comment briefly upon their effectiveness. Particular attention will be given to what research can tell us about how lay citizens interact with science and make decisions about science-related issues that affect or interest them, such as the take-up of the MMR vaccine. The lecture concludes by suggesting what the implications of such research might be for science education for citizenship.
