Finding Other Worlds

LISA KALTENEGGER PhD. MSc. MEng
This event took place on 11th December 2008 at 2:00pm (14:00 GMT)
Berrill Lecture Theatre, The Open University, Walton Hall Campus, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
After a decade of extrasolar planet search, we found amazing bizarre worlds in our night sky: Most of the detected extrasolar planets are sizzling hot and so close to their stars that they must have stopped just before crashing into them. How do we find these worlds? What are the telescopes that can take their fingerprints and add up pieces of this intriguing puzzle?

But the most amazing discoveries yet are now just within reach:

Earth-like planets. We are living in an exciting time where we will answer the thousand years old question... are there more 'Pale blue dots' in the sky?

Lisa is currently working at Harvard as researcher and associated lecturer. Her research is focused on atmospheres of extrasolar planets and how we could detect habitability on worlds that are lightyears away (CSI for exoplanets).
