Emerging Technology and the Corporate University

This extract is taken from the Corporate University Handbook, by Gower publishing. The chapter that it introduces evaluates key emerging technologies which will influence the future of the Corporate University.

The presentation talks about the concept of the expanding infosphere of technology as a model for understanding technical innovation. The problem for futurologiest is how to measure the value of each innovation. New wireless technologies are used to illustrate this idea.

Knowledge Publishing and Argumentation - Tools for Modelling Contested Knowledge Domains

In 2010, will research still be published primarily as prose? This question is designed to focus imagination on a complementary infrastructure that is 'native' to the network paradigm, enabling new kinds of knowledge dissemination, peer review, debate, and analysis of ideas.

In this introduction I provide a brief update on the progress of the Scholarly Ontologies project, which has been building an environment to enable analysts to model the contested claims and arguments in a field. End-user communities that we are targetting include students, educators, researchers, consultants, librarians and publishers, working individually or collaboratively. I describe the rationale behind the underlying discourse representation scheme, user interfaces designed to deliver a semantic annotation environment that is usable by people who are not ontology engineers, and the new kinds of search and visualization services that become possible when a research field is rendered as an argument network.

ProLearn TV : An Introduction

This short presentation introduces Prolearn Workpackage 2 - Interactive Media and gives an brief overview of the key topics and deliverables.

The ProLearnTV concept is presented and the issues concerning the telepresence framework used and how content may be managed are discussed. Key issues are that Prolearn partners should be able, now, to contribute relevant, short and integrated ProlearnTV segments to be hosted on the ProlearnTV portal site.

The CoAKTing NASA Mobile Agents Testbed - Collaborative Advanced Knowledge Technologies in the Grid

The AKT consortium researches applications of Advanced Knowledge Technologies. The CoAKTing work in that consortium explores the use of advanced collaborations tools supporting teams working across the Internet.

In this presentation Dr Simon Buckingham Shum discusses an extreme example of such collaboration, the challenge facing NASA in working with remote scientific teams on Mars. In an April/May 2004 field trial investigating future technologies to support manned surface exploration on Mars, the NASA Ames Mobile Agents project evaluated CoAKTinG systems from The Open University's Knowledge Media Institute (Compendium and BuddySpace) and Southampton University's Intelligence-Agents-Multimedia Group (Meeting Replay).

Grassroots initiated networked communities: a viable method of overcoming multiple digital inequalities within communities of locality?

The UK government seeks to overcome the 'digital divide', and offering "internet access for all who want it" by 2005. It is unlikely, however, that this will be achieved through government funded interventions focussing primarily on achieving physical access to the internet. My research considers that a possible solution may be found in the emerging phenomenon of grassroots initiated networked communities. These are communities of locality that have developed their own internet and/or intranet infrastructure with minimal external support.

The first year of research was chiefly concerned with investigating issues surrounding the digital divide, technology adoption and sustainability. The initial findings will be presented, and the second year research introduced. In my second year I will be focussing on social software; considering whether web based collaborative tools can support the sustained development of networked communities.

Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications - DECT introduction and application overview

DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) is a flexible digital radio access technology for cordless communications in residential, business and public environments. Designed for short-range use as an access mechanism to the main networks, DECT offers cordless voice, fax, high speed data and multimedia communications, wireless local area networks and wireless PBX. It thus has applications in the factory, office, home and public areas. For network operators DECT is also a cost-effective and flexible alternative to conventional cable/fiber connections into customers' premises, by providing "Wireless Local Loop".

Frequency bands have been made available for DECT in more than 100 countries worldwide. DECT services are compatible with GSM and ISDN and dual-mode DECT/GSM handsets are available. In a large number of countries DECT operates in a protected band, i.e. no interference from other technologies. ETSI DECT is one of the technologies the IMT-2000 specification.

Aesthetic Mediation Using Participatory Hypermedia

This talk looks at research aimed at extending the tradition of hypermedia support for decision-making, as in argumentation systems, and sense-making, as in spatial hypertext and concept mapping, by building on recent work in the conflict resolution and mediation fields.

In these fields, the problems groups face are primarily with each other, as opposed to with subject matter. Facilitators must expressly address the emotional as well as more cognitive dimensions of a dispute situation. Mediation of such disputes often takes place in a highly charged environment, requiring great care and skill on the part of the facilitator.

Traditional conflict resolution and mediation methods focused on rationalist approaches to surfacing issues and forging solutions. Recently, techniques such as transformative mediation (shifting the emphasis away from solution-finding toward individual empowerment and mutual recognition) and aesthetic intervention (using the creation and consideration of art objects as the means for articulation of nuance and emotional expressiveness in dialogue) have expanded the range of options that mediators and facilitators have to bring about reconciliation. Practitioners of such methods must draw on their own aesthetic and empathic skills in order to guide participants through sessions effectively. Self-reflection on these issues and experiences appears to be key in the ongoing improvement and effectiveness of such practices.

In the first four months of my doctoral research at KMi, I have focused on three related questions: What could participatory hypermedia contribute to aesthetic intervention and transformative mediation practices? What is the role of the practitioner/facilitator of such efforts, in particular the required ethical and aesthetic competencies, especially in terms of the creation and shaping of hypermedia artifacts? What are the existing and needed affordances of Compendium for such work?

I will describe the results of my initial literature review and experiments.

Engineering Semantics on the Web

In this talk I will discuss the various issues associated with the development and maintenance of semantic web sites, i.e., web sites augmented with semantic information, expressed using web-based knowledge representation languages, such as RDF or OWL.

I will begin the presentation by discussing the nature of semantic web sites and I will illustrate the various roles semantics can play, such as providing information about web resources, structuring the architecture of a site, or even providing the globality of a site specification, as in the OntoWeaver approach. Having distinguished between different kinds of semantic web sites, I will then discuss the kind of functionalities that a semantic approach enables. In particular, I will use the KMi web site as a test case and present a number of semantics-enabled services, providing support for query answering, information visualization and browsing, and user customization. In the talk I will also address the pragmatic issues associated with constructing semantic web sites, such as how to address the annotation bottleneck.

Hence, the purpose of the talk is two-fold: i) to illustrate the various issues associated with engineering semantic information on the web, and ii) to stimulate a discussion within KMi, both to gain an understanding of the advantages and costs associated with adding semantic information to the KMi web site, and to brainstorm about the kind of functionalities that such enhancement could enable.

BuddySpace - Instant Messaging, Maps, and Enhanced Presence For Knowledge Workers

The synchronous (real-time) presence of peer-group members can enhance the emotional well-being of tele-workers and improve problem solving performance and situated learning. To promote the deployment of next-generation presence-awareness tools in collaborative environments, we have implemented an open-source cross-platform Instant Messaging and geo-location tool called BuddySpace, which provides multiple views of collaborative workgroups based on the concept of 'active dots on geographically-accurate detailed maps', and augmented by a variety of semantically-based services. BuddySpace is being deployed in several innovative contexts, including distributed computing projects and distance learning courses at The Open University in order to create new models of peer collaboration for sharing the right knowledge with the right people in the right places at the right time.
