<title>Pavis Lecture - A Sociologist in Politics</title>

4.30pm Professor (the Lord) Giddens is widely recognised to be one of the world's leading social scientists and is known for his distinctive combination of  scholarship with public and political engagement. He has published widely in many languages with his best known books including The Consequences of Modernity (1990), Modernity and Self-Identity (1991), The Transformation of Intimacy (1992), Beyond Left and Right (1994) and The Third Way: The Renewal of Social Democracy (1998). He was Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science from 1997-2003 and became a member of the House of Lords in 2004. The annual Open University Pavis lecture is organised by the Department of Sociologyís Pavis Centre which undertakes research concerned with the relations between culture and society. It was founded in 1993 with a bequest from former Open University student, the late James Pavis, a keen student of sociology and anthropology who wished to promote their study at the Open University.
